Malaysia Marks Milestone with NVIDIA Collaboration
On 20 August 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed NVIDIA chief executive Jensen Huang at the YTL Green Data Centre in Kulai, Johor — a meeting that signaled more than a courtesy call.

It marked Malaysia’s official step into becoming ASEAN’s leading artificial intelligence hub, powered by a landmark RM10 billion partnership between NVIDIA Corporation and YTL Power International Bhd.
AI Infrastructure Powered by Green Energy
The deal will see the construction of advanced AI data centres running on renewable energy, making Malaysia the only NVIDIA Cloud Partner located outside the United States. YTL has joined the ranks of global technology leaders, placing itself alongside Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud.

This partnership aims to deliver not only state-of-the-art infrastructure but also the nation’s first sovereign large language model (LLM) — a homegrown AI system tailored to Malaysia’s languages, industries, and digital needs.
Driving Jobs and Local Talent Growth
According to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the mega project will create high-value opportunities for Malaysians. Roles such as data scientists, AI engineers, and cloud specialists are expected to grow, with the initiative also driving national upskilling efforts.

“AI is transforming jobs, not eliminating them,” Human Resources Minister Steven Sim recently noted, stressing that those who adapt and upskill will benefit most from the shift.
A National Leap Toward AI Sovereignty
Government leaders described the collaboration as a turning point in Malaysia’s technological trajectory. The sovereign LLM is envisioned to strengthen digital autonomy and bolster national security, while also generating solutions specific to local and regional challenges.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo added that the adoption of AI infrastructure could unlock over US$113 billion in productive capacity for Malaysia, boosting innovation across industries from healthcare to smart cities.
Global Recognition and Regional Leadership
The partnership reflects the culmination of discussions that began in December 2023, when Anwar first met Huang to explore AI investment opportunities.

Now formalised, the agreement cements Malaysia’s place in the global AI supply chain and positions it as ASEAN’s Centre of Excellence for artificial intelligence.
Tengku Zafrul stressed that Malaysia’s international engagements are producing tangible results, laying the groundwork for transformative investments that will reshape the nation’s economy and technological future.
