Malaysia’s hopes for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup are effectively over after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ruled Malaysia out of two qualifiers after they were beaten 3-0. The result gave Vietnam a six-point lead in the group and secured a place in the tournament.

Malaysia’s previous 4-0 wins over Vietnam and 2-0 wins over Nepal were also annulled. The decision came after a nine-month investigation, sparking a storm of frustration and criticism in the country’s football scene.
Match Results Changed
The AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee said Malaysia had been given default losses in both matches due to the use of ineligible players. The decision cost the team six points, leaving Vietnam top of the group. The final match is now a formality. The match is scheduled to be played on March 31. However, it will not affect the result.
FIFA Investigation
The controversy began after the match against Vietnam in June last year. The international football body FIFA began an investigation after receiving complaints. The investigation revealed that the citizenship documents of seven foreign-born players were forged. None of them had Malaysian ancestry or family ties.

For this reason, FIFA also imposed a large fine on the Football Association of Malaysia. At the same time, the players were temporarily banned.
Players’ Punishment
Of the seven accused players, three are Argentines, two are Spanish, one is Dutch and one is Brazilian. They have each been banned from official matches for 12 months. Although the International Court of Justice later eased some of their bans.

According to the court’s decision, they will be able to practice and participate in football activities with the club. However, the ban will remain in place for official matches. The decision has created a new controversy in the country’s football community.
Appeal and Reaction
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) initially appealed against the decision. They appealed to the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, the appeal was ultimately dismissed. As a result, FIFA’s original decision was upheld. In this situation, frustration began to grow among football fans in the country. Many criticized the administrative errors.

Future Challenges
After this incident, a new discussion has begun on the future of Malaysian football. Officials say that it is important to focus on rebuilding the team. At the same time, emphasis is being placed on developing young players. Plans are being made for a good performance in the upcoming international competitions. Although the dream of the Asian Cup has been shattered, new opportunities lie ahead. Therefore, those concerned are trying to handle the situation positively.
