Malaysia applies to joins BRICS, Russian FM Visits Malaysia

Malaysia’s recent application to join BRICS, which now includes countries like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, is a significant step. This move signals Malaysia’s desire for stronger international cooperation and economic ties within this growing economic bloc.

Russian Foreign Minister Visit

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s recent visit to Malaysia highlights the strengthening relationship between Malaysia and Russia. During his visit, Lavrov met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other officials to discuss various bilateral and global issues. Key topics included cooperation in trade, investment, science and technology, defense, education, tourism, and culture. They also discussed global issues like the situation in Palestine, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire and humanitarian relief, and the conflict in Ukraine, advocating for dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

China Boost

China has also given a boost to Malaysia’s application by expressing it’s support to join BRICS, stating it welcomes “like-minded partners” into the group. On Sunday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that he had formally submitted an application letter to Russia, the current chair of the BRICS bloc.

Geopolitics

Malaysia’s potential BRICS membership could enhance its global influence, attracting more foreign investments and amplifying its voice in international affairs. This move is also seen as part of BRICS’ strategy to diversify and expand its membership, reflecting a shift towards a more multipolar world order.

In conclusion, Malaysia’s application to join BRICS and its efforts to build stronger ties with Russia mark a strategic shift towards deeper international collaboration and economic integration within the BRICS framework. These actions are set against a backdrop of global power shifts and strategic interests from other global powers, especially NATO. This realignment could reshape the geopolitical landscape in Southeast Asia, highlighting the region’s increasing importance in global affairs. Malaysia’s proactive approach in navigating these dynamics aims to enhance its national interests and global standing.
