On Thursday, November 14th, at approximately 6:00 PM, 10-year-old Liu Kai Xin set out on her bicycle to purchase ice cream near her home in Kuang, Selangor, Malaysia.
Tragedy struck near a basketball court along Jalan Stesen Kuang when her trousers became entangled in the bicycle chain, causing her to lose control and fall.
According to reports, the impact of the fall caused a severe head injury, leaving Liu in critical condition. Witnesses at the scene immediately rushed to help her, and she was taken to Sungai Buloh Hospital for emergency surgery.
Police Findings: Initial Theories Dispelled
Initial reports speculated a possible hit-and-run incident. However, Bernama reported that police investigations ruled this out after inspecting Liu’s bicycle and her clothing.
Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor, the district police chief, stated, “The findings match the tear marks and lubricant traces on her trousers,” confirming that her fall was caused by her trousers getting caught in the chain.
Witnesses also corroborated this account, and there was no evidence of a vehicle collision.
A Week in Coma Ends Tragically
Despite undergoing surgery and receiving intensive care, Liu remained in a coma for a week. Unfortunately, on November 20th, at around 10:00 AM, she succumbed to her injuries at Sungai Buloh Hospital.
Her grieving family decided to forego an autopsy, citing emotional and cultural reasons. Liu’s aunt, according to Oriental Daily, shared their anguish and explained their decision, expressing their wish for Liu to rest in peace.
Lessons from a Heartbreaking Loss
Authorities have reminded the public to be mindful of loose clothing that could pose risks and to perform regular bicycle maintenance.
Superintendent Hafiz also urged the public not to spread unverified claims online, emphasizing the need for accurate information to avoid undue panic.
