Katherine (Katie) Chappell, visual effects editor for Game of Thrones, was killed in a horrific accident during a safari tour near Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2015.
At just 29 years old, the talented artist was killed by a lion attack when she tried to take a picture of a resting lioness with her car window down.

Within seconds, the lioness stood up, jumped out the window, and attacked her. Despite her best efforts, the guide accompanying her could not save her. The heartbreaking incident has raised new questions about safari safety.
The Moment Sudden Attack
Witness Ben Govender described the scene that happened before his eyes. According to him, the guide jumped into the seat and tried to fight off the animal when the lioness first bit him. But after the first attack, the lioness backed away a little and attacked again a second time.

Katie suffered serious injuries to her face and body, which did not allow her to receive treatment. Guide Pierre Porteguit suffered a heart attack after seeing this scene.
Park Warnings And Investigation
Park authorities said that tourists are given clear instructions to keep windows closed when entering the lion enclosure. There are also large signs on the side of the road and in front of the gate to this effect.

Expert Kevin Richardson warned that wild animals can lose their natural fear of humans in a familiar environment, so the risk increases if the rules are not followed. The park and police are currently jointly investigating the incident.
Family Mourning And Memories
New York-born Katie moved to Vancouver with dreams of working in big films. She became a member of the Emmy-winning team for working on the 2014 episode “The Children” of ‘Game of Thrones.’

Family described her as a lively, brave and adventurous person. Sister Jennifer said Katie had boundless enthusiasm—people could not forget her presence anywhere.
Social Media Reaction
Many people online said that strict instructions to keep windows closed were visible as soon as they entered the park. Some are asking how open the window was for the lioness to attack so easily.

Others are sarcastically suggesting that Katie may have thought the lion was a Game of Thrones fan and came close for a photo.

However, most are reminding us of the importance of following the rules to avoid such unfortunate accidents.
