A tragic incident unfolded in Bacabal, Maranhão, Brazil, on the morning of June 30, when journalist Lenildo Frazão allegedly stepped on the body of a missing 13-year-old girl while filming a report about her disappearance.
The girl, identified as Raíssa, had gone missing the day before after drowning while swimming with friends in the Mearim River.
“It looked like an arm.”
According to O Imparcial, Frazão entered the river to demonstrate its depth to viewers during a live segment.
As he waded through the water, he suddenly reacted with fear after stepping on something.
He said, “I think there’s something down here at the bottom of the water.”
He then backed away, looking over his shoulder, adding, “It looked like an arm. Could it be her?”
Firefighters Recover Body from the Same Location
Shortly after the incident, firefighters who were assisting in the ongoing search returned to the location the reporter had indicated.
Much to their horror, they discovered Raíssa’s body at the exact spot where Frazão had been filming. She had been missing since the previous day.
No Signs of Violence, Death Ruled as Accidental
Divers supported the recovery of the body. A post-mortem examination later confirmed that Raíssa died from accidental drowning, and there were no signs of violence.
She was laid to rest on the evening of June 30, The Mirror reported.
Community Mourns the Victim
The school announced a three-day mourning period following her passing. In her memory, friends, family, and community members held a vigil with candles and prayers.
