A simple act of kindness on a Sabah beach has unexpectedly turned into a viral story across Malaysia. A Malaysian man who helped return a stranded dolphin to the sea at Karambunai Beach, Kota Kinabalu, found himself at the centre of public attention.
Videos of the incident spread rapidly online, showing the dolphin alive but struggling near the shoreline. While many praised the man’s quick action, authorities later confirmed that the case is now under investigation.
Dolphin Found Struggling on Shore
Several short clips shared on social media showed the dolphin partially out of the water, moving weakly as waves washed over it.
In one widely shared video, a young man can be seen pulling the dolphin by its tail and guiding it back into the sea. The dolphin swam away moments later, appearing to regain strength.
Authorities Confirm Investigation
Despite the positive public reaction, officials have taken the matter seriously. Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar confirmed that a report had been received and investigations were ongoing.
He said the department was aware of the viral videos and would release more information once all facts were verified. Authorities stressed that such cases fall under wildlife protection matters and must be handled carefully.
Why Dolphin Strandings Happen
Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Borneo Marine Research Institute director, Associate Prof Dr Ching Fui Fui, explained that dolphin strandings are not unusual and occur worldwide, including in Sabah waters. She noted that causes can include illness, old age, young calves becoming separated, or environmental factors such as pollution and underwater noise.
She also pointed out that shallow and gently sloping beaches like Karambunai can make it easier for dolphins to become trapped near shore.
On public involvement, Dr Ching said returning a stranded dolphin to the water can help reduce dehydration and heat stress, as dolphins should not be left dry for long periods. However, she cautioned that handling must be minimal and done properly, as rough or incorrect actions can increase stress for the animal.
As dolphin strandings become more frequent in recent years, the Sabah Wildlife Department has urged the public to report such cases through its established careline while investigations into this viral rescue continue.
