On June 21, 2024 (Friday), a hotel receptionist in his 30s from Jeju was arrested for allegedly raping a Chinese tourist in her room at a hotel in Yeon-dong on the island’s northern coast. The arrest was approved by the Jeju District Court on Thursday evening, following an incident that occurred around 4 a.m. on June 14, 2024 (Friday). The victim, heavily intoxicated after a night out with other Chinese tourists, claims she was assaulted after being escorted back to her room.
Incident Details
According to The Korea Times, security camera footage (CCTV) reportedly shows the employee entering the woman’s room shortly after she was brought back by her friends, who left immediately afterward. The employee then returned to his duties at the reception desk after allegedly committing the assault. The victim later confided in one of her travel companions, who then reported the incident to the police.
Background and Police Response
Prior to his arrest, the hotel receptionist allegedly used a master key to enter the victim’s room, believing he was responding to a room service request. The victim stated she was too intoxicated to resist during the incident.
Given her scheduled return to China, authorities took legal measures to preserve crucial evidence for the suspect’s trial. The allegations have raised concerns about hotel security and traveler safety in Jeju. Jeju Seobu Police are actively gathering evidence to support the prosecution’s case.
Initial Report
The allegations came to light on 18 June, 2024 (Tuesday), shocking the local community and emphasizing the risks faced by travelers, particularly in unfamiliar places. This incident highlights the need for closely examining hotel safety protocols and staff behavior.
As legal proceedings move forward, authorities are committed to ensuring justice for the victim while upholding the integrity of the investigation.
