The tragic and brutal killing of a 31-year-old medical student at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sparked outrage across India. What was initially reported as a suicide has now been confirmed as a murder following the release of an autopsy report, leading to the arrest of a police volunteer and igniting widespread protests.
The Initial Discovery and Family’s Ordeal
On August 9, 2024, the lifeless body of the young medical student was found in a seminar room at the hospital. According to the victim’s family, they were initially informed that the death was a suicide. However, the family’s suspicions were immediately raised upon hearing the news.
When the family rushed to the hospital, they were subjected to a grueling three-hour wait before being allowed to see her body. The condition of the victim’s body, as described by her family, suggested she had been brutally assaulted. They observed signs of severe trauma, including unnatural positioning of her legs and other physical injuries, which made it clear that her death was not self-inflicted.
Autopsy Report Confirms Brutal Assault
According to India Today, the autopsy report, which has since been widely circulated, confirmed the family’s worst fears. The report detailed the extent of the violence inflicted upon the victim, revealing that she had been sexually assaulted and then strangled to death. The report documented severe injuries, including significant genital trauma and a fractured thyroid cartilage, indicating that she had been subjected to extreme violence.
These findings heavily contradicted the initial claims of suicide and pointed to a premeditated and brutal murder, further fueling public outrage.
Arrest of a Police Volunteer
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested in connection with the case. As reported by Times of India, CCTV footage placed Roy near the crime scene on the day of the incident, making him a prime suspect in the ongoing investigation. His position as a civic volunteer gave him access to the hospital, which is now being carefully examined.
While Roy’s arrest has brought some relief to the grieving family, the public, along with the family, continues to demand a thorough investigation to ensure that all those responsible are held accountable.
Protests and Demands for Justice
As the gruesome details of the crime came to light, protests erupted across Kolkata, particularly among the medical community. Students, professionals, and concerned citizens have taken to the streets to demand justice for the victim and hold those in power accountable. These protests have pressured the West Bengal government to ensure a swift and transparent investigation.
Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, has urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to speed up their investigation into the case. She has set a deadline of August 18, 2024, for the investigation to be completed and has vowed to personally lead a protest rally on August 17 if justice is not served.
Additionally, Naman Shrivastava, who goes by @englishaugust on Instagram, has spoken out about the heartbreaking case of the Kolkata trainee doctor. With a heartfelt plea, he criticized the authorities for their mishandling of the case, accusing them of trying to cover up the crime as a suicide and blaming the victim. He also emphasized the bigger problem of systemic failure, stressing the dangers women face across India. He urged people to move beyond political conflicts and demanded real change.
