North Korean leader Kim Jong-un appeared alongside his teenage daughter Kim Ju-ae on Tuesday as they observed the test-fire of the destroyer Choe Hyon, according to images released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday.
Footage shows Kim speaking on the phone while Ju-ae and other officials watched the drills on a large screen as the vessel launched multiple strategic cruise missiles at sea.
The missiles reportedly flew over the Yellow Sea, with KCNA saying the results gave Kim ‘great satisfaction’.
“Important successes have been recently made in putting the strategic and tactical strike means on a practical basis and deploying them for an actual war. Such successes have updated the readiness of our army for strategic action and enhanced the confidence in it,” Kim said.
Kim Ju-ae, widely viewed by analysts as a possible successor to her father, currently holds the position of director of the army’s Strategic Rocket Force, though her future leadership role has not been officially confirmed.
The reported test took place as the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) conducted the joint Freedom Shield military exercise, running from March 9 to March 19, with up to 18,000 South Korean troops participating.
The exact location of the images released by KCNA could not be independently verified.
