On August 22, 2024, a 61-year-old Austrian tourist was arrested in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, after being caught engaging in sexual acts at a shrine. The incident, which took place at around 11:30 a.m., was reported by a witness who saw the foreign man and his female acquaintance, both involved in the act in plain view on the shrine’s grounds. The Austrian, currently unemployed, was observed leaning against the shrine during the incident.
Arrest, Investigation and Current Status
According to TBS News Dig, the man was taken into custody on charges of showing disrespect to a place of worship. Due to his silence during questioning and his status as a tourist, he was considered a flight risk. Meanwhile, his female acquaintance, a Japanese woman in her 40s from Kesennuma, has admitted to her involvement in the incident.
The Austrian man remains in custody while police continue their investigation into the incident. Authorities are working to understand the full details and motives behind the behavior, ensuring that appropriate legal action is taken.
Cultural Sensitivities and Local Reactions
In Japan, there is a strong respect for religious sites. Engaging in sexual activities at these sacred places is considered a serious breach of respect. According to SoraNews24, Japan provides alternatives like “love hotels” for private encounters. However, using a shrine for such activities shows a clear disregard for local customs and the importance of these sacred spaces.
In contrast, larger cities like Tokyo have designated red-light districts, such as Kabukicho in West Tokyo, that is specifically intended for adult entertainment.
This area, which cater to such needs, is located far from Kesennuma. This contrast shows how inappropriate the shrine incident was and emphasized the clear difference between suitable locations for such activities and the sacred nature of the shrine.
