A quiet neighbourhood in Johor Bahru was shaken after a man was allegedly attacked inside his own home, with his wife and another individual now facing attempted murder charges.

The incident, which occurred late at night, has unsettled residents due to the alleged involvement of family members in what prosecutors described as a life-threatening assault.
The Night of the Incident
According to court documents, the incident took place on 22 December 2025 at a house in Taman Ehsan Jaya. The victim, 48-year-old Kumaresan Ganapathy, was reportedly at home when the attack occurred.

Prosecutors allege that his wife, N. Egavalli, together with her friend, R. Kamala Sarna, attempted to kill him by pressing a pillow over his face. The prosecution said the act could have resulted in death had it not been stopped.
Charges in Court
Both of the accused were charged at the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court under Sections 307 and 34 of the Penal Code, which relate to attempted murder committed with common intention.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted, they could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years, a fine, or both. The prosecution highlighted the seriousness of the alleged act in arguing its case.
Bail Arguments
The prosecution sought to deny bail, citing the severity of the offence. However, defence counsel from the legal aid office argued otherwise.
The lawyer told the court that Egavalli is the primary caregiver to two autistic children, aged 17 and 21, both of whom are non-verbal and dependent on her daily care. He argued that her family responsibilities made her unlikely to abscond.
Family and Work Details
The court also got some background on the people in the case. The husband actually works at a warehouse over in Changi, Singapore, and makes around S$2,500 a month, usually coming home late at night.
Kamala Sarna’s counsel informed the court that he has a child, and that his spouse works as a nurse at a private hospital with a monthly income of about S$2,219. These details were raised in support of the bail application.
Court Decision and Next Steps
Magistrate Mohd Zamir Suhaimee granted bail of RM20,000 (approximately S$6,340) to each accused, with two sureties required per person.
Both were ordered to surrender their passports, report to the police station once a month, and refrain from contacting the victim or any prosecution witnesses.

The case has been fixed for mention on 3 February, pending the completion of documentation. Investigators are also looking into a possible insurance-related motive linked to the alleged attack.
