For those who do not know, Jay Chou is one of the best-selling artists in Asia and was known as the “King of Mandopop“ according to Wikipedia. The singer has sold over 30 million records and is widely known for his repertoire of Chinese songs that you may have sung in the karaoke rooms. However, could an incident in Singapore lead to this reknowned singer’s downfall?

As part of his Carnival World Tour, Chou performed two concerts at the Singapore National Stadium on 17 and 18 December 2022. Prices of the tickets ranged from $218 – $388 depending on the seating arrangements for the concert goers.

During the concert, Jay Chou sang a few songs with some feeling that the music was louder than the vocals of the Mandopop singer. Jay Chou also invited ‘special guests’ up on stage to sing alongside with him and some commented that Jay Chou was not singing for the majority of the concert which made it feel like a show.

Fans couldn’t help but to compare Chou’s performance with JJ Lin’s and Mayday’s concerts which were also held at the same venue recently. Netizens felt that the other two artists’ concert didn’t seem to have the same issue as Chou’s one and bemoaned the fact it was due to his age that caught up with him. Some even asserted that Chou failed to take his fans seriously.

From the backlash itself, it appeared that many fans were dissatisfied and underwhelmed by the entire concert itself. Many have voiced concerns about Chou’s vocals as well as the subpar sound system and broken lightsticks that was provided. Commenters even added that it was more of a magic performance instead of a concert.

On the other hand, there are also fans that defended him by stating that Jay has suffered from ankylosing spondylitis since the age of 18 – a rare type of arthritis that causes pain and stiffness in one’s spine. Therefore, he was in pain even when he was performing on stage. As fans, they should be kinder to him, if he was “lazy” he wouldn’t even have this concert. One fan feels that Chou and his team will definitely take the feedback seriously.

Following that, Chou posted videos and pictures from the performance and complimented the crowd for their great enthusiasm in spite of the torrent of unfavourable comments on his social media accounts.

Now that you’ve read the comments from both perspective, what is your stand on this matter?
