Jack’s Place has been a cherished establishment for nearly five decades, serving delectable meals and creating unforgettable moments for its customers. As a multi-generational family-owned business, this steakhouse has stood the test of time by constantly adapting to changing trends while remaining true to its heritage and values.
Back in 1966, when Jack’s Place opened its doors, it was known as a romantic spot for candlelit dinners and special occasions. Today, it has evolved into a beloved family space that holds a special place in the hearts of Singaporeans. The iconic green and white chequered tablecloths, sizzling steaks, and classic buttered baked potatoes transport many Singaporeans down memory lane. Jack’s Place was one of the first restaurants in Singapore to introduce steaks served on a hot plate.
Jack’s Place was started by Mr Say Lip Hai, who arrived in Singapore from Hainan Island and started as a cook boy with the British troops in Sembawang. He honed his skills at preparing the perfect roast beef and Yorkshire pudding there. When a British housewife tasted one of Mr Say’s now-famous meals, she saw the potential and suggested starting a catering business with her husband, Jack Hunt, at his pub on Killiney Road. And so, in 1968, Mr Say agreed and embarked on this partnership. Jack Hunt eventually returned to the U.K. and sold his share of the business. However, his namesake, “Jack the Chef,” continues to run the kitchen to this day.
Standing strong amidst the test of times
What sets Jack’s Place apart is its unwavering commitment to family, affordability, quality, and heritage. According to Alvin Say, the current COO of JP Pepperdine Group, his grandfather, the founder, Mr Say, personally visits the market every day, handpicking the freshest ingredients for the restaurant. He strongly believes in providing value for money, ensuring that the price of their steaks remains affordable for all, regardless of fluctuations in raw material costs. This dedication to quality and accessibility has endeared Jack’s Place to generations of Singaporeans.
During the challenging times brought about by the pandemic, Jack’s Place turned to technology, maximising food delivery apps to facilitate convenient ordering. In a radio interview at MoneyFM, Alvin Say admitted they faced difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While customers could still enjoy the restaurant’s offerings through ordering online, many of their staff members, particularly older people, were vulnerable to the virus. Drawing from past experiences with outbreaks like Swine Flu and SARS, Jack’s Place had prepared contingency plans.
Through the Life and Livelihood Programme, they prioritised the health and safety of their staff, allowing older people to stay home while still receiving their salaries. The younger staff members bravely stepped up as frontline workers, ensuring continued operations.
Bold and vibrant vibe
Jack’s Place preserves its legacy by maintaining its iconic menu to remain relevant in a competitive landscape. The sizzling hot steak plates and the irresistible baked potatoes continue to delight customers. However, the restaurant also embraces innovation, regularly introducing seasonal dishes to entice adventurous palates.
In addition to their exceptional service, Jack’s Place appeals to the younger generation by infusing the menu with vibrant and bold flavours. Thanks to the involvement of the second generation of owners, the restaurant has embraced a more dynamic approach.
With its rich history and warm ambience, Jack’s Place has become synonymous with cherished memories for Singaporeans. The iconic dishes, such as the mouthwatering baked potatoes and sizzling steaks, have become culinary legends in their own right. As Jack’s Place thrives, it remains committed to serving unforgettable moments, one steak at a time.
