A tragic accident occurred on June 18 in Southeast Pontianak, Indonesia, when a 22-year-old Indonesian woman fell from the third floor of a gym located on Jalan Parit Husein 2. According to BuzzKini, the Pontianak City Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Details of the Accident
Reports from TribunPontianak indicate that the woman was using a treadmill positioned dangerously close—only 60 cm—to an open window.
While exercising, she lost her balance, fell backward, and fell out of the window, leading to fatal injuries. The absence of a balcony or barrier exacerbated the risk, resulting in her tragic fall.
Eyewitness Account
Latif, a witness in the weightlifting area at the time, recounted a sudden commotion. After hearing people shouting about the incident, he discovered that someone had fallen from the building. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM local time.
Ongoing Investigation
According to BuzzKini, Antonius Trias Kuncorojati, the head of the Criminal Investigation Unit, revealed that the victim was from Sungai Raya, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. An autopsy is currently being conducted, and CCTV footage from the gym is under investigation to gain further insights into the incident.
Apology and responses
The footage has gone viral on social media and has sparked significant concern about the gym’s safety measures. The video posted by @/Heraloebss on X has further highlighted the severity of the incident and the gym’s safety negligence.
Viewers shared their thoughts and responses regarding this incident, mostly mentioning the narrow space and safety protocols.
One user said, “The gym is really ignoring safety protocols because if you face the window, you could fall backward. The railing isn’t high and the space is very narrow!”
“The correct way is to leave an empty space behind the treadmill, at least 2 meters! You shouldn’t place other gym equipment within that radius.”
“The position of the treadmill was really wrong, then the window was left open like that.”
Additionally, the gym has since issued an apology, will be temporarily closed for 3 days, and sent condolences to the victim’s family.
“We apologize, but all sports activities at KGym Paris are temporarily closed for the next 3 days. Paris members can go to the LGym branches in Ilham, Siantan, Octo, or Sei Jawi.”
“We apologize to the trampoline class participants this week. Due to KGym Paris being closed for the next 3 days, the schedule will be shifted to next week. For those who do not want to move to next week, a refund will be provided. Please contact the admin. Thank you for your understanding.”
“The extended family of KGYM Fitness Pontianak expresses our deepest condolences on the passing of Fathiya Nur Eka Rahma binti Slamet Purnomo. May Allah SWT accept all her good deeds, forgive all her sins, and grant her the best place by His side. We also pray for strength and patience for the family she leaves behind.”
