A number of landslides triggered by continuous rain across Tegal Regency in Central Java have forced thousands of residents to flee and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.

Footage captured on Friday shows widespread destruction, with cracked streets and collapsed houses at Padasari Village, while villagers had to evacuate to nearby shelters with their belongings.

“It all started on Monday night. That week, there was heavy rain. Then the ground began to crack—crack, crack, crack […] People panicked because at first we thought the cracks were just normal. But as days went by, it kept getting worse,” shared a local.

“Everyone evacuated. That night, it was like a ghost village. There was no one left living there,” he continued.

According to one villager, such disasters had not occurred in the area since 1964.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Tegal Regency said that more than 2,400 residents of Padasari Village were relocated to evacuation sites, where they faced harsh conditions and acute respiratory infections, according to local media.

Almost 700 homes have reportedly been damaged by the landslides, prompting local authorities to allocate urgent relief to the region.
