A Dispute That Went Too Far
On November 29, 2024, a deeply unsettling event unfolded in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, when the graves of Mattayang Daeng Lengu and his wife Nurlia were exhumed and relocated.
The situation drew significant attention, especially after a video of the exhumation went viral.
The Video That Went Viral
A video capturing the exhumation process quickly spread across social media. In the footage, locals can be seen digging up the couple’s graves which were not located side by side.
The recorder of the video remarked, “This is concrete evidence that political differences impact even those who have passed away.”
Political Tensions Behind the Relocation
According to Tribun News, this drastic action was the result of a political disagreement between the cemetery’s landowner and the deceased couple’s daughter, Nurmi, which was linked to Indonesia’s 2024 regional elections.
The dispute over political support in the 2024 elections grew increasingly tense, eventually leading to the decision to move the remains of Mattayang and Nurlia to a public cemetery in Manjalling Village.
Although Nurlia passed away in March 2022 and Mattayang in July 2023, political tensions surrounding their graves persisted.
The Graves Were Moved to a Public Cemetery
With the approval of local authorities, residents carried out the exhumation and relocation of the couple’s remains to a public cemetery in Manjalling Village. This was done to resolve the conflict and prevent further escalation.
Local officials hoped that the relocation would bring an end to the dispute and restore peace in the community.
Deputy Regent’s Call for Unity
Following the relocation, Bulukumba’s Deputy Regent, Andi Edy Manaf, met with Nurmi to hear her side of the situation. “This issue should serve as a lesson for all of us,” he said, stressing the importance of unity despite political differences.
Manaf also expressed hope that the matter would not escalate any further and urged the community to work together in mutual respect. Meanwhile, a politician from the National Mandate Party (PAN) urged Bulukumba residents to respect one another and not let political differences tear apart their relationships.
