An unusual and coloured spectacle was seen in Argentina on Sunday when above 1,800 individuals sailed in great numbers upon a salty reservoir. It was organized in the area of Mar Chiquita lagoon sometimes referred to as the Dead Sea twin due to the high salinity in the area. Individuals of other locations came to attend the event and participate in a world record attempt.

The mass floating occurred on the occasion of Planchita Festival in the town of Miramar de Ansenuza. They were led into the water and lay upon their backs with grasped hands and were floating slowly over the lagoon. Due to salted water, people could easily perform floating despite some people not being good swimmers.

An Attempt at Records in Salt Water.

According to organisers, there were 1,837 individuals who were officially registered to attend the event. This was quite near but still lesser than the present Guinness World record of 1,941 people which was established in 2017, in Lake Epecuen, another salty lake in Argentina. In spite of the fact that officials of Guinness were not there, organisers closely documented the event with photos, videos and an organised number counting system.

According to Griselda Cuello who was one of the organisers of the event, the final number could be more. She said that there were individuals who went to the water without the wristbands and hence they were hard to count. Nonetheless, she outlined the day as a tremendous success and referred to the day as a happy celebration.

More Than Just Floating

It was not just a record-breaking event. It was also to be used as a promotion of Miramar de Ansenuza as a tourist destination. The organisers wanted to demonstrate how unique the lagoon could be and persuade more people to visit the location.

Tourists and natives were experiencing it simultaneously. According to one of the tourists, the moment was wonderful and that it was so beautiful to see so many people together in the water. She further mentioned that she was looking forward to coming back the following year so that she could participate again.

Food, Festival Spirit, and Music.

Together with the floating activity, live music, DJ acts, and food stalls were also part of the Planchita Festival. Visitors, friends, and families spent the day in the relaxed atmosphere at the lagoon.

The local government and other institutions supported the organisation of the event by the La Escuelita Cultural Space and Public Library. The festival brought a lasting impact even without entering the record books and making it a major event instead of a simple floating assignment, making it an energy-filled and togetherness-filled public event.
