Zoo in Japan Bans Single Men From Entering Alone Over Harassment Concerns

A Safe Space for Visitors—or Not?

Zoos are meant to be places where visitors can relax, enjoy nature, and interact with animals. Whether families spend quality time together or individuals seeking a peaceful retreat, these spaces offer a unique escape.

However, one zoo in Japan has made a controversial decision to restrict entry for certain visitors, citing concerns over misconduct.

Healing Pavilion’s New Entry Policy

According to Sinar Harian, Healing Pavilion, an interactive zoo in Tochigi Prefecture, has banned single men from entering alone.

The rule, which took effect on January 26, requires solo male visitors to be accompanied by family or friends.

The zoo, known for allowing guests to feed and cuddle animals like cats, dogs, and sheep, was created to provide a therapeutic experience.

Its director, Misa Mama, announced the restriction on social media, explaining that the decision was made to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all guests.

“Starting today, we regretfully will no longer accept single male visitors. This is not because of arrogance or misunderstanding, but because there are many people who have ulterior motives.

Recently, I’ve been experiencing stress and chest pains because of it. Our establishment is not a nightclub. If you really want to interact with the animals, please come with your friends or family.”

Additionally, they uploaded a sign on its Instagram page.

Rough translation of the sign:

“Single men are not allowed to enter. There have been too many invitations for meals, drinks, and dates. Frankly, it’s become a hassle. Please visit with friends or family.”

Reports of Harassment Spark Ban

The new rule follows multiple incidents involving single male visitors approaching and flirting with female guests. Some were even reported to have made inappropriate or lewd comments.

Misa Mama clarified that Healing Pavilion is meant to be a space for emotional healing, not a place for socializing or matchmaking.

Backlash Over Discrimination Concerns

While the zoo maintains that the policy was introduced for safety reasons, it has sparked criticism online. Some argue that banning all single men is unfair and discriminatory.

Despite the controversy, Healing Pavilion stands by its decision, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a peaceful and therapeutic environment for visitors and animals alike.
