Sudden Ice Shower Hits KL Suburbs on Tuesday
A rare weather phenomenon took many by surprise on Tuesday afternoon (August 5, 2025), when a hailstorm hit several residential neighborhoods just outside Kuala Lumpur, particularly Pandan Indah and Ampang, at around 4:30 PM.

According to Kosmo, residents experienced a sudden shift in weather, from typical heavy rain to a dramatic downpour of hailstones, accompanied by thunder and strong winds.
Videos quickly spread online, showing excited locals collecting ice pellets from the ground and even placing them in cups as proof of the rare event.
Loud Thuds, Viral Videos, and Community Reactions
In one TikTok video posted by user @/ringgo_pandan, a man can be seen filming the storm in Ampang as hail falls steadily. He then bends down and picks up a single piece of hail from the ground.

Moments later, another person joins him, also picking up what turns out to be a hailstone, confirming that hail had indeed hit the area.

Locals also reported hearing loud banging sounds as the hail struck rooftops and parked vehicles.
No Injuries Reported
Despite the intensity of the sounds and the surprise it caused, no injuries or property damage have been officially reported.
Comments and Reactions
The hailstorm became so talked about, with many Malaysians taking to social media to share their personal experiences:
“It was painful riding the motorbike just now… Felt like I was being shot.”
“The car roof was banging loudly from the falling ice… while I was waiting for my child at religious school.”
“Passed through Ampang earlier and was shocked. I thought someone was throwing stones at my car.”
“At SMK Taman Kosas school, the surau (prayer hall) roof collapsed.”
Not Common, But Possible
While hailstorms aren’t something Malaysians see every day, they’re not completely out of the ordinary either.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, reported by Astro Awani, hail usually forms inside towering thunderclouds known as cumulonimbus, the same ones responsible for heavy downpours and lightning.
Inside these storm clouds, strong upward winds push raindrops into much colder layers of the atmosphere, where they freeze.
As more water droplets stick to them and freeze, they grow larger and heavier until eventually, they fall to the ground.
Although Malaysia has a hot, tropical climate, the frequent thunderstorms during monsoon transition periods can create just the right conditions for hail to form.
It is rare, but not impossible, which explains why it always seems to take people by surprise when it happens.
