United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres from New York City on Thursday urged to stop the war in Iran as ‘the Middle East crisis has lurched into its second month’.

“My message is clear. To the United States and Israel – it’s high time to stop the war that is inflicting immense human suffering and already triggering devastating economic consequences. To Iran – to stop attacking their neighbours,” Guterres said.

“The Security Council has condemned these attacks and reaffirmed the need to respect navigational rights and freedoms along critical maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. Conflicts do not end on their own. They end when leaders choose dialogue over destruction,” he concluded.

Tensions have risen across the Middle East since the US and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, while diplomatic talks aimed at ‘limiting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs’ were ongoing.

Iran struck back with attacks on Israeli and US targets in the region, and there were reports of explosions in several Gulf countries.

Iran later confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed, and his son Mojtaba Khamenei was named as his successor. The conflict spread to Lebanon when Hezbollah got involved ‘in revenge’ for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader.
