Guru Murthy, 45, a former soldier turned security guard, allegedly confessed to murdering his wife, P. Venkata Madhavi, 35, after an argument on January 16.
He claimed to have dismembered her body, cooked the parts in a pressure cooker, and disposed of them in Jillelaguda Lake, according to The Hindu.
Police are still investigating his claims and have yet to find any physical evidence to corroborate the confession.
The Disappearance
The victim, 35-year-old Venkata Madhavi, was last seen at her Jillelaguda home on January 15.
However, according to India Today, CCTV footage from their residence showed that Madhavi had not left the house after January 15, which raised suspicions and led to a more thorough investigation.
Madhavi reportedly argued with Murthy on January 16 about her plans to visit her hometown, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, for Sankranti, a Hindu festival celebrating the end of winter and the arrival of longer days.
According to The Indian Express, Murthy claimed that Madhavi left their home in New Venkateshwara Nagar Colony, Meerpet, in anger and never returned.
Missing Person Report Filed
Two days later, on January 18, Murthy joined Madhavi’s parents to file a missing person complaint at the Meerpet police station.
Murthy initially cooperated with the police and appeared to assist in the search for his wife.
Confession After Police Questioning
As the search intensified, police grew suspicious of Murthy’s behavior. Inspector Nagaraju told NDTV that Murthy’s behavior raised suspicions, leading officers to question him further.
On January 22, Murthy allegedly confessed to killing Madhavi during the argument on January 16.
Murthy detailed how he dismembered her body in the bathroom, boiled the parts in a pressure cooker, and ground the bones using a pestle. Over three days, he reportedly disposed of the remains in Jillelaguda Lake and other locations.
Investigation and Lack of Physical Evidence
Despite Murthy’s confession, police have not recovered any remains. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ch. Praveen Kumar stated,
“We are verifying his claims, and as of now, we have not found any body parts. The investigation is progressing.”
There are no updates regarding specific searches of Jillelaguda Lake or other sites where Murthy claimed to have disposed of the remains.
Investigators continue to work to verify his confession and gather physical evidence.
Reclassification of the Case
Initially filed as a missing person report, the case was later reclassified as a murder investigation after Gurumurthy’s confession.
Key evidence, such as:
- a stove,
- knife,
- roller, and,
- phenyl bottle was seized to aid in the investigation.
Frequent Arguments and Family Details
The couple, married for 13 years, had been experiencing frequent disputes over the years. At the time of the incident, their two children, a son and a daughter, were reportedly staying at Murthy’s sister’s house.
While the argument over visiting Madhavi’s native place is mentioned as a potential trigger, authorities have not established a clear or definitive motive for the crime.
