Walking through a tropical garden usually means spotting colorful butterflies or hearing the chirp of hidden birds. However, at the Penang Butterfly Park, one specific resident is stealing the spotlight in a very human way. It isn’t a rare bird or a bright insect, but a vibrant green lizard that seems to have mastered the art of being a polite host.

While most reptiles tend to scurry away or hide when humans get too close, this little guy does the exact opposite. He sits comfortably on his favorite rock, watches the guests walk by, and then slowly lifts a front paw to move it back and forth. It looks exactly like a friendly wave, and it is leaving visitors absolutely stunned.
Why is this lizard being so polite?
At first glance, it truly looks like the lizard is saying “Good morning” or “Welcome to my home.” People often stop in their tracks, reaching for their phones to record the moment.
It is hard not to smile back when a tiny creature gives you such a warm reception. Social media has recently been flooded with clips of this interaction, making the lizard a local celebrity.

Biologists suggest that while it looks like a human greeting, this “waving” behavior is actually a way for lizards to communicate with each other. In the wild, they use these arm signals to show they aren’t a threat or to mark their territory.
However, because this lizard has grown up around people, he seems perfectly relaxed using his “hand signals” right in front of the crowds.
A star attraction in Penang
The Penang Butterfly Park has always been a popular spot for nature lovers, but now many people visit specifically to find this one lizard. He doesn’t seem to mind the fame at all.
In fact, he often waits for a group to gather before showing off his signature move. It has become a game for children and adults alike to wave first and see if he responds.

The staff at the park enjoys seeing the joy this small reptile brings to everyone. It is a rare moment where nature and humans connect in a way that feels very personal. Even if you aren’t a big fan of reptiles, it is difficult to resist the charm of a green lizard that just wants to acknowledge your presence with a friendly gesture.
