Foreigner Jumps to Death Trying to Evade Immigration Checks at Johor CIQ

On October 31, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex when a foreign man lost his life after jumping from a pedestrian bridge. 

The man, identified as a Sri Lankan in his 30s, reportedly took this drastic step around 4:48 PM, in an apparent attempt to evade immigration inspection.

Details of the Incident

According to the police report and Johor Baru South OCPD Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, the police received notifications from the public regarding the incident. The victim, who worked as a factory operator, leaped from the bridge that connects BSI with Johor Baru Sentral.

Additionally, initial investigations suggest that he was trying to escape the immigration checks taking place at the CIQ.

Circumstances Surrounding His Death

In a shocking turn of events, the man landed on a vehicle (Perodua Myvi) passing below the pedestrian bridge.

Unfortunately, despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead by an assistant medical officer from Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA). ACP Raub confirmed that there were no criminal elements involved in this incident, which has been classified as a sudden death.

“The victim’s body has been taken to HSA for autopsy,” he stated.

Following the incident, social media erupted with photos and videos, drawing significant attention. Anyone with further details about the incident is encouraged to contact the Johor Baru South police headquarters hotline at 07-2182323, as stated by ACP Raub.
