Fire Destroys 95% of Penang Fireworks Shop, No Casualties Reported

A major fire broke out at a fireworks shop in the Taman Pekaka area of ​​Penang, Malaysia, at midnight on March 22. The Penang Fire and Rescue Department said that a fire engine was quickly dispatched to the scene from the Nibong Tebal station after receiving an emergency call at 12:05 am.

The shop, measuring about 10×10 square feet, was about 95 percent burned in the fire. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Fire incident

Immediately after the incident, fire service members quickly started working to control the fire. First, they created a firebreak to prevent the spread of the fire. Then, an aggressive firefighting strategy was used. The fire was brought under control in just 20 minutes. The entire situation was normalized in about an hour.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said, “No casualties were reported.”

The firecracker shop was almost completely destroyed in the fire. It is believed that all the goods inside the shop were burnt to ashes. A Yamaha Y15 motorcycle was also damaged by about 90 percent. The fire also spread to three outdoor AC units of a nearby house

Although there was no major explosion, the intensity of the fire was quite high. Panic spread among the locals.

Investigation on Process

After the incident, the matter has been handed over to the Fire Investigation Unit for investigation. How the fire started is being investigated. Initially, it is believed that the fire spread quickly due to the presence of flammable materials.

However, no final cause has been announced until the investigation is completed.

Authority’s Action

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said five reports have been lodged so far.

“The case is being investigated under Section 286 of the Penal Code for negligence involving explosive materials. Investigations are ongoing,”

The authorities have also said to tighten precautions to avoid such incidents in the future. At the same time, security measures are also being reviewed.
