A grim incident unfolded at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna, Bihar, when the family of Fantus Kumar made a shocking discovery just hours after his death on Friday night, November 15, 2024.
Kumar, admitted after suffering a gunshot wound, had undergone surgery before passing away in the ICU.
When his family returned the next morning, they found his left eye missing, sparking allegations of negligence and foul play against the hospital.
From Admission to Tragedy
According to India Today, Fantus Kumar was rushed to NMCH on Thursday, November 14, 2024, after being shot in the abdomen by unknown assailants.
He underwent surgery on Friday to remove the bullet and was placed in the ICU for further care.
Despite medical efforts, Kumar succumbed to his injuries later that evening at 8:55 p.m. His body remained in the ICU overnight, as postmortem procedures could not be conducted after dark.
Left Eye Missing
On Saturday morning, November 16, Kumar’s family returned to the ICU after briefly leaving at 1 a.m. to find his left eye missing. A relative reported seeing a surgical blade near the bed, intensifying suspicions of malpractice.
The family accused the hospital of negligence, with some alleging involvement in illicit activities.
“How can they be so negligent? Either someone from the hospital conspired with the people who shot him or the hospital is involved in some business of taking people’s eyes out,” Kumar’s brother-in-law told NDTV.
Hospital’s Response and Investigation
Dr. Vinod Kumar, the medical superintendent of NMCH, called the incident unacceptable and offered two possible explanations. “Either someone has taken out the eye, or a rat has gnawed at it. In both cases, it is our fault,” he stated.
He dismissed claims that the eye might have been taken for a corneal transplant, explaining that such procedures require removal within hours of death to be viable.
In response to the incident, the hospital has formed a four-member team to investigate. Local authorities have registered an FIR (First Information Report), and CCTV footage from the hospital is being reviewed to uncover the truth.
