Singapore has begun regular public service of autonomous shuttles in the Punggol residential district, marking the first time driverless passenger vehicles have operated on its streets for everyday users.
Footage shows passengers boarding the shuttles and taking rides along local streets. Monitored by a shuttle instructor, the autonomous vehicle is seen automatically switching lanes and stopping at traffic lights, as passengers enjoy the ride.
“It was really superb. Like it’s really quiet. It’s very smooth, and you can really feel the modernness of Punggol. What I mean is, as you go around the ride, it really feels advanced like any other city you are in,” a passenger said.
“I think the ride was fantastic. I actually, for some reason, felt so safe. Like literally, it felt like a human was driving it, but there was no human element. So I think, you know, of course, there’ll be a lot of fears people might have,” added a second.
The service is operated by Grab and WeRide. It comes after months of trials covering thousands of kilometres and more than 1,000 test rides. Free trips are being offered during the launch phase as operators gather data to ensure efficiency.
Officials say the shuttles will complement the country’s transport network, ease manpower demands, and pave the way for autonomous public transit across other parts of Singapore.
