Barcelona suffered a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday. The match was marred by street chaos before the game, involving home supporters targeting the visiting team’s bus.
Pre-match footage shows Barcelona fans filling the streets with cheers, celebrations, and flares. Some fans escalated matters by throwing stones and other objects at the Atletico team bus, causing a heavy police presence to disperse the troublemakers and clear the area.
At least one hole was visible on the coach afterward, hastily patched with duct tape, echoing Atletico’s previous visit to Camp Nou in March, when the escorted team bus also suffered multiple smashed windows, attributed to violent home supporters.
The match delivered further drama on the pitch, as Pau Cubarsi’s contentious red card was swiftly punished by Julian Alvarez’s superbly taken free kick before Atletico exploited Barca’s numerical disadvantage with Alexander Sorloth adding a second in the 70th minute to seal a 2-0 win.
A major incident occurred before Atletico scored their second goal. After goalkeeper Juan Musso put the ball in play for a corner kick, centre back Marc Pubill seemed to handle the ball inside the six-yard box. This sparked Barcelona’s protests for a penalty, which Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs dismissed as he allowed play to continue.
“I saw it live because I was warming up on the sideline […] It’s a strange situation, but that’s a penalty. It has happened in other matches as well,” said Barca’s Ronald Araujo after the match.
Atletico’s Giuliano Simeone, meanwhile, clashed with journalists over the incident, pointing out, “I don’t know if you watched the match. Did Juan play it at any point? Did he touch it? We never play out with the goalkeeper; we always do it with the defenders.”
Amid all the drama, Barcelona and Atletico will meet for the sixth time this season on Tuesday, April 14, at Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with the winner to face either Sporting CP or Arsenal in the semi-finals beginning April 30.
