A 14-year-old boy in Brazil, Davi Nunes Moreira, died in Planalto after injecting himself in the leg with a mixture of crushed butterfly and water for an alleged ‘online challenge.’

He was taken to Vitória da Conquista General Hospital, where he spent a week under specialist care before passing away on Thursday, 13 February 2025, according to Brazilian news site VivaBem.

Symptoms Started With Vomiting and Pain
Moreira first told his father he had hurt himself while playing after he began limping and vomiting. However, as his condition worsened, he finally admitted to injecting himself with the butterfly mixture.

His father then rushed him to the hospital, but his health continued to decline.
Investigation Into ‘Online Challenge’ Connection
Authorities are examining whether Moreira was influenced by an online challenge. The Civil Police of Bahia are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
Possible Causes: Embolism, Infection, or Toxins
Medical experts believe several factors could have played a part in Moreira’s death.
Dr. Luiz Fernando D. Relvas from Hospital Santa Marcelina said, “We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body.”
He also explained that air bubbles in the syringe could have caused an embolism (blockage in a blood vessel), leading to rapid deterioration and death, according to the Mirror.

Investigators are also considering whether toxins from the butterfly triggered septic shock, ultimately shutting down his organs.
Father Discovered Syringe Under Pillow
While cleaning the house, Moreira’s father reportedly found a used syringe under his son’s pillow, suggesting that the teenager may have planned the act.

Additionally, local reports state that Moreira had purchased supplies from a chemist before mixing and injecting the mixture into himself.
Authorities in Vitória da Conquista continue to investigate, with autopsy results expected to clarify the factors behind his death.
