Shoppers at E-Mart’s Electromart Yeongdeungpo branch in Seoul were given a glimpse into the future of retail this week as humanoid robots and robotic dogs were demonstrated inside the store.
Footage filmed on Thursday shows a humanoid robot dancing, interacting with visitors, and performing a punch-and-kick combination. A dog robot was also on display, rolling across the floor as visitors watched.
“I think it’s strong enough, picking up heavy objects, I think it’d be a great thing. When you think about parcel delivery, that could be helpful, you know, seeing the elderly and what have you,” said visitor John, referring to the humanoid robot.
“I think it might be helpful for people who, again, can’t pick up heavy things. It could be useful in the future,” he added.
Another visitor, Na Hyun Kim, said, “It was fascinating and surprising to see the robot shake hands and greet people just like a human.”
The event drew families and tech enthusiasts, many of whom stopped to film and observe the robots up close.
Emart’s Electro Mart in Seoul is the first major domestic retail chain to launch a Robot Store in the country, with 14 models on offer, with the company betting that immersive, high-tech experiences can offer shoppers something e-commerce simply cannot.
