Dad Dives into Sea After Daughter Falls from Disney Cruise Ship

Child Falls from Deck 4 During Photo Stop

On 29 June, a Disney cruise ship travelling from the Bahamas to Florida saw a dramatic sea rescue after a young girl fell overboard from the fourth deck. Witnesses stated she had been posing for a photo near a railing when she suddenly dropped into the ocean. Her father immediately jumped in after her.

The emergency “man overboard” code, “Mr. M.O.B., port side,” was broadcast over the intercom at approximately 11:30 a.m., according to passengers on board. Panic and confusion quickly spread among those on the 14-deck vessel as many rushed to balconies and upper decks to locate the two figures in the vast sea.

Crew Executes Swift Mid-Ocean Rescue

The crew of the Disney Dream, which has 4,000 passengers, reacted remarkably quickly, even though the ship was traveling at full speed halfway between the Bahamas and Florida.

Within minutes, the captain swung the ship around, slowed it, and launched a lifeboat.

Passengers on upper decks filmed the rescue as crew members tossed life rings into the ocean while a lifeboat closed in on the pair, who had been treading water for nearly ten minutes. Within seconds, the crew pulled the father and daughter safely back on board.

A family from Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, captured the final moments on video, showing the visibly relieved father and a crew member wrapping the child in blankets.

Rescue Praised as Rare and Miraculous

Disney Cruise Line confirmed the successful rescue of two guests but did not reveal their identities or relationship. The company commended the crew for their prompt action and credited their rigorous safety training for the successful outcome.

Although cruise ships implement extensive safety precautions—such as plexiglass barriers and high deck railings—overboard incidents, while rare, do happen.

A 2019 report by the Cruise Lines International Association recorded 25 overboard incidents, with only nine resulting in successful rescues.

Observers widely considered this rescue an exception, crediting the crew’s swift response, calm sea conditions, clear daylight, and the ship’s reduced speed on its final day at sea.

Cruisers Reflect on Close Call

Passengers described the event as terrifying but ultimately uplifting.

Many acknowledged that while Disney cruises are considered extremely safe, unexpected accidents can still occur.

The family who captured the footage expressed gratitude that their own children were safe and praised the Disney crew’s efforts, calling it nothing short of a miracle.

Later that day, the Disney Dream made its scheduled return to Fort Lauderdale.
