When a huge crocodile emerged abruptly out of a river in Indonesia with the carcass of a woman missing in the river in its jaws, the villagers screamed with fright. That was the shocking incident that occurred in Aceh province at Luan Boya River on February 15.
Individuals who were close to the river would only observe with horror the massive reptile dragging the lifeless body of 36-year old Jusmitawati in the dark water.

A Terrifying Discovery
Jusmitawati had been to the river earlier in the day with some friends and was shell-fishing. The river is referred to as crocodile area though most of the local people visit the river to fish and collect food.
The witnesses claimed that she walked further into the water when the others were closer to the shoreline. Suddenly, she disappeared. Her friends called after her and called after her but received no response.

The group was soon back to their village to seek assistance. And a search was commenced, which was too late. The crocodile was resting under the surface waiting before it could strike.
Chaos by the Riverbank
The following day, villagers could see a huge crocodile in the muddy water fluttering in the water. In one of the videos filmed by the locals, the animal raised its head above the water, and the body of the woman could be easily spotted in its mouth.
People shouted in panic. Other men were shooting at the reptile with hope that it would set her free. The other gentleman had gotten up a tree and was attempting to strike the crocodile with a lengthy stick.

The sound of gunfire rang along the river, but the crocodile tossed himself up and plunged back in the water. It was later found and killed slightly less than a mile from the place of the attack.
Body Found Inside Crocodile
Villagers sliced the stomach of the animal after capturing it. They discovered fragments of the body of Jusmitawati as well as clothing. Local authorities affirmed that the crocodile had a length of approximately six meters. It was among the biggest witnessed in the region in recent years.

Residents were advised not to go near the river until the safety is enhanced by the police. Nevertheless, to most families in the area rivers remain a significant source of food and living.
Indonesia has a large variety of crocodiles which includes large estuarine crocodiles which may reach enormous sizes. Experts assert that attacks have been on the rise with the crocodiles losing their natural habitats and approaching villages.
The scary image of the river will not quickly leave the minds of people of Aceh. What started out as a regular shell-gathering day turned out to be a tragedy that was able to shake the whole community.
