Recently trending on Netflix, the survival show “Physical: 100” has been embroiled in rumors suggesting that its final challenge was rigged. Despite this controversy, the show, which was the top non-English language series on the platform, concluded on February 21 with CrossFit athlete Woo Jin-yong as the victor.
During the finale, Olympic cyclist Jung Hae-min, who competed against Woo, alleged that the final challenge was interrupted twice. However, the episode that aired appeared to be a single, uninterrupted game. Jung initially considered accepting the outcome and remaining silent but ultimately spoke out about the issue in an exclusive interview with a South Korean news outlet.
According to Jung, the final competition was paused by Woo midway through the game, as Woo claimed that the equipment was creating excessive noise. Although no issues were discovered upon inspection, the production crew lubricated and oiled the machines. Despite this, when Jung was on the verge of winning, the production team once again paused the game and instructed the competitors to relocate.
“Just as I thought the game was over,” Jung recounted, “the production team halted the match again, but I continued to pull the rope to finish the game.” Jung was then informed that “there were audio problems with the footage, so we cannot use it for the show. If you agree to a rematch, we will shorten the rope and restart the game.”
Jung initially refused the rematch, citing exhaustion, but eventually agreed due to the logistical challenges of the cast and crew returning the next day to film. He expressed feeling pressured to comply, and wondered if he was not allowed to win. During the rematch, the rope was wrapped around the spool as before, and although they promised to cut it by the amount Jung had been in the lead, he was unsure if they actually did.
