In many parts of the world, construction workers face significant risks daily as they tackle jobs in dangerous situations. A recent viral TikTok video shared by @/harumanisperlis showed the dedication of construction workers involved in the ambitious monopole installation project along the first Penang Bridge.
The footage, which garnered more than 625,000 views to date shows these workers diligently installing wires, and electrical cables which demonstrates their commitment to the task.
However, it has also raised serious safety concerns among viewers, with many praying for their safety.
Public Concerns and Reactions
The viral video has sparked a variety of responses from viewers, reflecting empathy for the construction workers as well as thanking them for their diligence.
Many commenters expressed their prayers for the workers’ safety while praising their dedication and the lengths they go to support their families and earn a living. One commenter expressed sympathy for the poster too, noting the challenging weather conditions—strong winds and fallen trees—and urged the video poster to stay safe during her visit to the area.
“Sis, you be careful too. The weather isn’t great; the wind is strong, and many trees have fallen. Be careful always.”
Another reaction mentioned the high-risk nature of the job, cautioning against asking if the workers earn high salaries due to the dangers they face. The commenter wished for the safety and success of both the workers and the poster.
“Don’t ask if their salaries are high… the risks they take are as high as their work… May it be made easy and lead to success in their careers…”
Additionally, a viewer shared on having seen the workers too, stating how pitiful it was to witness them working even in heavy rain.
“It was even more pitiful earlier…under heavy rain…”
A New Addition to Penang’s Skyline
Despite these concerns, Penang is set to improve its landscape with the construction of Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) Monopole Transmission Tower project next to the Penang Bridge.
Launched in late 2022, this RM500 million (approximately 153,752,224 SGD) initiative includes an 8.5-kilometer overhead transmission line that will run parallel to the bridge. The project is expected to be completed by November 2024.
31 Monopoles Designed to Enhance the Bridge
According to reports and additional comments on the viral video, the project will involve the installation of 31 monopoles intended to enhance both the infrastructure and visual appeal of the bridge.
Of these, 26 will be erected from the sea, while five will be established on land. Notably, six of the monopoles will be designed to resemble betel nuts, or “buah pinang,” which not only adds cultural significance but also contributes to the aesthetic charm of the installation.
The monopoles are anticipated to become a new tourist attraction, further enriching the beauty of Penang’s skyline.
The Importance of Worker Safety
As the project progresses, keeping worker safety a top priority is essential. Building tall structures like these monopoles comes with its own set of risks.
For this reason, project managers need to establish strong safety protocols and measures to protect all workers involved in this important development.
