The Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, experienced a series of violent incidents on Sunday as cartels retaliated following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho’, who was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Drone footage shows buildings and vehicles engulfed in flames across the city, with thick columns of smoke blanketing large areas of Puerto Vallarta. Some people can be seen setting vehicles on fire as the violence spreads.

Following the events, the government of Puerto Vallarta urged merchants and service providers to consider the “temporary closure of their establishments” to protect their safety. Authorities also reported that vehicle removal had begun on various roadways across the municipality.

Meanwhile, the governor of Jalisco, Pablo Lemus, stated that he remains in coordination with federal authorities following the operation that left seven people dead, including Nemesio Oseguera.

Lemus added that school activities have been temporarily suspended for tomorrow and that public transportation, which was suspended after the incidents, will be fully restored in the coming hours.

The state government also announced that so far, 25 people have been detained for their alleged involvement in violent acts, and another 14 for alleged looting.
