Chinese New Year Firework Accident: Man’s Leg Amputated Below Knee

A man’s left leg was severed in a firework explosion in Segamat district, Johor. The accident occurred at around 12:30am on 17 February, Tuesday, in the Taman Damai Jaya area of ​​Bukit Siput. Segamat district police chief Mohd Jumazanzahir Chek Ismail said the seriously injured man was rushed to Segamat Hospital.

He was given emergency treatment in the hospital’s red zone. Doctors confirmed that his left leg had to be amputated below the knee. However, his condition is currently reported to be stable.

How the accident happened

Initial investigations revealed that the man was using a firework called ‘Shoot Cake 4D 16 Shots (Premium)’ in front of his house to celebrate Chinese New Year. It is believed that the firework box was not properly secured and it tipped over.

The fire then hit his leg, causing immediate serious damage. The incident quickly caused panic in the area.

Girlfriend also injured

The man’s girlfriend was nearby at the time of the accident. The explosion also caused burns to his hands and feet. He was also taken to Segamat Hospital for treatment. Although his injuries are said to be less serious, the incident has raised concerns among family and neighbors.

Legal investigation

Police said the incident is being investigated under sections 6 and 8 of the Explosives Act 1957. Conviction under these sections carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison or a fine of 10,000 ringgit (around S$3237) or both.

Authorities have advised the public to use approved fireworks in open areas. They have also stressed the need to follow safety rules. Police have also urged the public to come forward with any information.
