China Discovers Substantial Thorium Deposits, Advancing Clean Nuclear Power Programs

Gigantic Thorium Deposit Discovered at Bayan Obo

As The Pulse reports, Chinese geologists discovered a significant thorium—a replacement nuclear fuel—deposit of an estimated 1.1 million tonnes in Inner Mongolia’s Bayan Obo region. Initial estimates put the discovery to provide nuclear power for thousands of years, significantly enhancing China’s energy security and diversification strategy.

The discovery coincides with a new national emphasis placed on reducing fossil fuel reliance by investing in next-generation nuclear technologies. Thorium, which is more prevalent in the Earth’s crust than uranium, is being relearned for its potential to fuel next-generation reactors with fewer environmental and security risks.

An Alternative to Uranium in Nuclear Power

Thorium has been recognized for centuries as a nuclear fuel option, but limited infrastructure and political will in the past made it hard to tap. Thorium is not fissile on its own, as uranium is, but can be treated inside reactors into a viable nuclear fuel. It produces significantly less long-lived radioactive waste and is also less likely to find its way into nuclear weapons.

Research indicates that molten salt reactors (MSRs) that use thorium in a liquid salt form have several safety advantages. MSRs operate at ambient pressure and are naturally more stable, reducing the risk of meltdowns. Thorium MSRs also eliminate the need for large-scale water cooling systems, making them an option in water-scarce environments such as deserts.

China Advances Thorium Reactor Development

China is currently the leader in thorium research. In 2021, the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics at China’s Chinese Academy of Sciences began operation of an experimental small thorium molten salt reactor in the Gobi Desert. Scaled-up operations are under consideration for the location in a planned 10-megawatt demonstration reactor that will break ground in 2025 and operate by 2029.

This program also falls under China’s general strategy to look for alternative nuclear energy sources as it transitions to clean energy. Thorium reactors would be the backbone of the country’s future energy infrastructure if viable and scalable.

International Ramifications of China’s Thorium Program

Experts believe China’s thorium project could determine the future of the world’s energy. As governments seek alternatives to fossil fuels and conventional uranium reactors, thorium could be a solution that addresses both sustainability and security needs. Other countries such as India, Norway, and the United States have also explored thorium power, but progress has remained largely in the lab.

China’s magnitude of discovery and early uses of thorium technology may make other energy providers rethink their nuclear strategy. The breakthrough may also bring about a shift in global political balance of energy leadership if thorium reactors become commercially successful.

Technical and Regulatory Challenges Remain

Although thorium energy shows promise, numerous challenges hamper progress. Extracting thorium from mineral ores requires acidic processing and large energy inputs, which harm the environment. Further, extensive utilization of thorium would require new regulatory standards, global control steps, and high investment in infrastructure.

While low weaponisation potential is generally referred to as the benefit of thorium, analysts stress ongoing strong non-proliferation control throughout the whole fuel cycle.

Future of Green Nuclear Energy

China’s discovery of thorium and reactor concepts are signs of accelerating momentum towards cleaner, more secure sources of energy. With the world trending toward low-carbon sources of energy, thorium can emerge as a viable addition to renewables and a safer alternative to conventional nuclear fuels.

The next decade is likely to determine whether thorium will transition from experimental stages to widespread adoption, setting the tone for future global energy production along the way.
