A Chinese fortune-teller who once predicted he would face a life-threatening event in his 50s was poisoned by his mistress in a shocking act of revenge, The Star reported.

The man, surnamed Zhou, was from Nanchong, Sichuan province. In May 2017, just before he turned 60, he became critically ill and was hospitalized.

Despite receiving medical treatment, he did not survive. It was later confirmed that he had been poisoned with paraquat, a highly toxic chemical that causes severe organ damage.

The Daughter’s Suspicion Led to a Police Investigation
Zhou’s sudden illness raised suspicions among his family. His daughter, who lived with him, conducted a rat poison test on his cough syrup and discovered toxic substances.
This led the family to report the matter to the police.
Authorities then launched an investigation and found that Zhou’s mistress, a woman surnamed Jing, was responsible for poisoning him.
Relationship Became Toxic Over Time
Zhou and Jing first met in 2011 when she sought his help for her mother’s terminal illness. Over time, their relationship became romantic, but it was filled with obstacles.
Jing allegedly became pregnant multiple times but was forced by Zhou to undergo abortions.

She repeatedly asked him to marry her, but he allegedly refused and later reconciled with his ex-wife. To push her away, Zhou even lied about having cancer, hoping Jing would leave him, Red Star News reported.
Feeling betrayed, Jing had even threatened to jump off a building. She later decided to take revenge.

Poisoned Cough Syrup and Underwear Led to His Death
In May 2017, after researching paraquat online, Jing mixed the poison into Zhou’s cough syrup.

She also soaked four pairs of his underwear in the chemical before giving them to him.

After drinking the cough syrup, Zhou experienced severe throat pain.

Furthermore, when he wore the poisoned underwear, his body developed ulcers and began to rot. His condition worsened, and he was eventually hospitalized, where he later died.
Court Rejects Murder Appeal
In September 2024, a Chinese court found Jing guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced her to 14 years in prison.
She later appealed the verdict, but the Nanchong Intermediate People’s Court recently rejected her appeal and upheld the original sentence.
