A kitten was found dead in a disturbing condition near Allamanda Residential College (Kolej Kediaman Allamanda) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) on Friday, 18 April 2025.
Images of the animal’s dismembered body, including what appeared to be a cleanly separated head, quickly spread online and triggered public outcry.

Concerned students who discovered the body contacted Shima Aris, an advocate against animal abuse known for her advocacy work through social media.
Her Instagram account has since been set to private.
The appearance of the remains led many to believe the kitten may have been deliberately harmed.
UNIMAS Says No Signs of Human Abuse
Following this, on Sunday, 20 April, UNIMAS released an official statement through its Corporate Communications Division on Instagram.
The university stated that its internal investigation, led by the campus security division, found no evidence of human involvement.

According to the university, the investigation involved interviews with witnesses, review of CCTV footage, and analysis of photos and videos taken at the scene.
It concluded that the kitten’s death did not involve any elements of abuse by humans.
UNIMAS also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all living beings on its campus, including stray animals, and urged students to work together to protect their welfare.
Public Raises Doubts About the Cause of Death
After images began circulating, many people, including animal lovers and concerned members of the public expressed doubts about the idea that the kitten’s death was accidental or caused by other animals.

Some pointed out that the condition of the body appeared too clean and precise to be the result of natural causes.
Public Reaction: Many Cast Doubt on University’s Conclusion
Unsurprisingly, the incident sparked a wave of emotional and frustrated responses online, with many expressing disbelief over the university’s findings.
Some online users were quick to dismiss the idea that the kitten’s injuries were caused by another animal.
One person stated that the remains looked too precise to be accidental, describing the separation as something only a human could have done.
Another comment questioned UNIMAS’s statement directly, pointing out how unlikely it is for any animal to dissect body parts so cleanly. They questioned the university’s conclusion of “no element of human involvement,” calling it unbelievable.
Some also warned that ignoring this could be dangerous, pointing out that anyone who could do this to an animal might one day hurt a person too. They called on authorities to act on the incident promptly.
Online Petition Gains Traction
In response to the university’s statement, a petition titled Justice for the UNIMAS Cat: We Demand A Proper Investigation was launched on Change.org.
The petition gained 4,845 signatures as of Monday, 21 April 2025, calling for a proper investigation into the case.
Police Report Filed by University Alumnus
Following this, on Instagram, Shima Aris confirmed that a police report has since been filed by one of UNIMAS alumni.

With police now involved, the incident has opened up wider conversations about how animal deaths are handled on campus and the need for better care and accountability.
