On October 20, 2024, a tense rescue unfolded at Block 350C Canberra Road, where a young boy was found standing on the ledge of a third-story Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat. The incident was captured in a video uploaded by the Complaint Singapore Facebook page.
The video captures the child standing on the ledge outside the window, dangerously close to falling, but seemed surprisingly calm. As the situation grew more tense, a man scaled the side of the building to reach the boy.
Rescue Efforts from the Ground Below
Additionally, the video also shows another man positioned on the second-floor ledge below, ready to assist if needed. On the ground, four men stood with a blanket, prepared to catch the child in case he fell.
When the man safely got a hold of the boy, he noticed an open window nearby, likely where the child had climbed out. He carefully placed the boy back inside the flat through the window.
People watching from below grew increasingly frustrated when they noticed the window had no safety grills and realized someone was inside the house. In the video, someone can be heard exclaiming “Someone’s inside!”
Parents Left Child Unattended
According to the original poster (OP), Nela M Hock on Facebook, she stated that several people attempted to knock on the door multiple times to alert the boy’s parents. However, no one answered, leading everyone to believe the child had been left unattended.
Many have speculated on how the child ended up on the ledge. According to a comment under the Complaint Singapore Facebook post, one possible explanation is that the child may have been left unsupervised while asleep. Upon waking, the child might have panicked and climbed out the window in search of his parents or guardians.
One commenter expressed strong disapproval of the parent’s actions, stating, “Should arrest his parents,” highlighting the belief that the parents should face legal consequences for their perceived negligence.
Another commenter echoed this sentiment, describing the parents as “irresponsible” and emphasizing the child’s luck that a “Samaritan” was there to prevent a potential tragedy.
One commenter suggested to “install window grill,” implying that basic safety measures could have prevented the situation altogether.
Meanwhile, another commenter called the rescuer a “Hero!” expressing appreciation for their bravery and quick thinking in saving the child.
This incident urged parents and guardians to take precautionary measures, such as installing window grills or keeping windows closed to prevent similar occurrences. There was a shared sense of relief that the child did not slip or attempt to jump off the ledge.
