Singapore’s Changi Airport has taken another step towards an inclusive travel experience. For the first time, a ‘Calm room’ has been launched, specifically designed for neurodivergent passengers and their caregivers. This space of about 200 square meters will serve as a calm and safe haven for sensitive passengers.

Its main purpose is to provide temporary relief from the hustle and bustle, light and noise of the airport. Located in the departure transit area of Terminal 2, the come room is part of the CARE@Changi program.
Towards Inclusion
Changi authorities have long been emphasizing on increasing passenger-friendly and humane facilities. The introduction of the come room further extends that initiative. This room is mainly for passengers who live with invisible disabilities.

The airport environment can sometimes be stressful for them. Therefore, this initiative is expected to make travel more comfortable.
Joint Planning
The Changi Airport Group worked with several social organizations to design the come room. These include the Asian Women’s Welfare Association and the Metta Welfare Association. In addition, discussions were held with families of neurodivergent people.

The space was developed based on the opinions and experiences of users. As a result, it is in line with real needs.
Four Distinct Zones
The room has four distinct zones. Upon entering, passengers are greeted by a neutral and calm environment. There is also a virtual Changi Experience Ambassador, who will provide assistance if needed. Each zone has been designed with different types of sensory needs in mind.

A Touch of Nature
A zone called ‘The Forest’ has nature-based visual projections. The green landscape of Singapore, soft music and bird calls will help passengers reduce stress.

The design, such as round windows, makes the environment more comfortable. The seating areas here are designed for different ages and comfort levels.
Movement
The third zone, ‘The Den’, is designed for passengers who find relief through movement. Soft walls and floors allow for safe movement. Stone-shaped cushions bring a sense of playfulness. It helps restore balance to the body and mind.

Private Sanctuary
The last zone, ‘The Nest’, has two private rooms. There are special noise reduction systems. Lighting control facilities are also provided. This allows users to adjust the environment according to their needs. This is especially helpful for passengers who are under intense mental stress.

Changi Airport Group Senior Vice President Ang Siew Min said that Changi wants to create a travel experience that is respectful and comfortable for everyone. According to him, the room will give peace of mind to passengers and caregivers.

@ahmadbafadhal Found this Calm Room at @Changi Airport Terminal 2 Transit Area beside Bacha Coffee and towards F Gates 😊 It was a tremendously good experience especially if you’re neurodivergent and I think you they should do more of this in the city or neighbourhoods! Go visit it when you’re in transit!
