A River Unlike Any Other
For its exceptional snorkeling experience, the Sucuri River is often cited as one of the clearest rivers on Earth. Near Bonito, in the southern state of Mato Grosso do Sul, the Sucuri River presents nature lovers with the rare opportunity to float above an intensely colored aquatic setting with visibility up to 30 feet.
The natural limestone springs feed the Sucuri River, giving it an extraordinary level of transparency owing to the high concentration of calcium carbonate, which acts to filter impurities. When sunlight hits the water, the clarity becomes a canvas displaying an underwater world of schools of brightly colored fish, thick vegetation, and sometimes, elusive creatures like river otters and anacondas.
A Serene Glide Through Nature
Joined by their guides, participants float down around 1,800 meters of unpolluted river, the current gently carrying them. The experience begins at Fazenda São Geraldo, where guests are instructed briefly and outfitted with snorkel gear, wetsuits, and life vests.
Entering the water means taking a short guided hike through the riparian forest with your guide. The trail is about 400 meters long and passes by several springs that feed the river. Along the way, guests might even spot a few birds, monkeys, or reptiles in their natural setting.
The river itself is never more than about three meters in depth with a pleasant temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit), so it’s a comfortable experience for any level. A support boat follows the group throughout the two-hour experience, ready to lend a hand to anyone who might need to rest or wants to get out early. Meanwhile, a guide floats alongside the crowd to maintain safety.
Wildlife Beneath and Above
Going snorkeling on the Sucuri River feels as if entering another realm. Schools of fishes like brycons and curimbas dart past while lush aquatic plants sway with the gentle flow. Elsewhere, felcherings of toucans and parrots would emerge from above, amplifying the ambiance of a jungle.
Although “sucuri” means “anaconda” in Portuguese, the river was not named for its native animals but for its winding shape. Views from aerial occasions back in the ’70s inspired the name: several tourists had noted how the river mingled through the jungle like a big snake.
Despite piranhas, stingrays, and anacondas co-inhabiting the region, guides assure visitors that these creatures generally avoid human encounters. Furthermore, guests should not attempt to touch or feed wild animals to preserve this fragile ecosystem.
