A Facebook video by user @David Villaverde recently gained attention for showing a shocking incident involving a football referee in Brazil. In the video, the referee, armed with a pistol, is seen charging at a player after an alleged altercation.
The Story
The incident took place on 7 June 2024 during an amateur match in Espírito Santo, Brazil. The referee, reportedly a police officer, had issued a yellow card, which angered a player. Tensions escalated when the player physically assaulted the referee, slapping him.
The referee then retrieved a handgun from his car, and returned to confront the player. Fortunately, other referees intervened before the situation worsened. The weapon was not fired, and no one was hurt, but the sight of a referee holding a weapon shocked everyone at the scene.
Following the altercation, the game ended and the referee filed a report at a nearby police station where the case is being investigated.
Past Events
This is not the first time an incident like this has occurred.
In 2015, in a similar fashion, Brazilian referee, and also military police officer, Gabriel Murta pulled a gun on players after allegedly being assaulted.
In 2017, Camilo Eustáquio de Souza, referee and police officer, sparked fear in bystanders when an amateur match in Brazil resulted in another physical altercation, prompting the referee to retrieve a gun and handcuffs from his bag.
These disturbing incidents sparked a broader debate about safety in amateur football. It raised concerns about the risks referees and officials face in volatile situations, emphasising the need for better security measures.
