Singapore’s Boon Lay Glade HDB estate is home to a unique piece of history. The old Jurong Fire Station, which operated from 1975 to 2017, once stood here. After the fire station was relocated, the area was transformed into a new housing project.

However, instead of erasing the entire past, the important ‘Host Tower’ was preserved. It is currently used as part of the estate’s playground. As a result, residents feel a touch of history in their daily lives.

A Monument to Heritage

The old Jurong Fire Station has long played an important role in the western part of Singapore. In particular, this Host Tower was the main training infrastructure for firefighters. Therefore, it was not demolished during the reconstruction.

Instead, the authorities decided to preserve it as a heritage. This has honored the past of the area. At the same time, it is possible to present history to the new generation.

New Transformation

In 2017, the fire station was relocated to Jurong West. Then the modern Boon Lay Estate was built on the old land. However, the historic tower was left in place amid the development. It is now the center of an open play area.

Children play here, and families spend time together. As a result, the old structure has been given a new lease of life.

Firefighter Theme

The play area and surrounding blocks of the estate also feature firefighter-inspired designs. The red color, siren motifs and fire truck-style elements are visible. This creates a thematic atmosphere throughout the area. Residents say that it is not only beautiful but also carries the identity of the area. At the same time, it also creates an educational experience for children.

Community Pride

For local residents, this preserved tower is now a symbol of pride. They believe that preserving history, along with development, is Singapore’s strength. New residents can also come here and learn about the stories of the past. As a result, a special connection has been created within the community. Many see it as a unique landmark in the area. It is hoped that such preservation initiatives will continue in the future.
