Madam Kamladevi, 54, has filed a police report after being assaulted at Bishan MRT Station. Speaking to Wake Up Singapore, she said that she felt “abused mentally and physically“.
Her family members and her are now appealing for eye-witnesses.
What Happened
At approximately 2.00pm on 1 October 2023, Kamladevi was on the escalator at Bishan MRT and headed towards the North-South Line.
When she was on the escalator, she noticed a Chinese man behind her who was pushing a stroller. The man was clad in a green shirt, purple short pants, and black glasses.
While she was in front of the man, she felt the stroller hit her ankle. She initially brushed it off as accidental contact. However, the stroller continued to hit her ankle no less than two further times.
On the third occassion of contact, she turned around and told the man to be mindful of his pram:-
Can you learn basic manners? You were hitting me.
Kamladevi shared that, at the material time, her slippers almost fell off due to the constant hitting from the stroller. On hindsight, she wondered if the man was trying to push her down the escalator.
The Man Punched Her Chest Twice
After Kamladevi asked the man to stop hitting her legs with the stroller, the man became upset and alleged that Kamladevi had “cut her queue earlier“.
The man came up close to Kamladevi and started screaming at her face. When Kamladevi pushed him away to get him out of her face, the man punched her on the chest two times.
Kamladevi followed the man into the train towards Toa Payoh MRT so that she could get a good photo of him with a view of filing a police report.. The man continued to yell at her in the cabin. Having taken the photo, she left the cabin at Toa Payoh MRT and reported the matter to the staff at the control station. The police arrived soon after.
Injuries to Chest and Ankle
Kamladevi’s daughter informed Wake Up Singapore that her mother suffered swelling and bruising on both her chest and ankle. We understand that a copy of a medical report has been sent to the Police.
In a conversation with Wake Up Singapore, Kamladevi shared that she was saddened by the fact that no one stepped forward to help or intervene even though the station was crowded.
Today am sharing my feeling with heavy heart. My English may not be so good but my message and& my intention is clear to express what kind of world we are living in…
There were many many people who passed by me but none came and help or ask if am I ok ? I am feeling abused mentally and physically. Today it was me who mistakenly walked infront of someone on escalator tomorrow it can be anyone’s mother, wife, old parents or kids.
I just want to say please stand up for each others in bad times. We cannot live in a society that allow for people like this to behave however they like and get away with it.
In a Facebook update dated 3 October 2023, Kamladevi appealed for those with information to step forward.
Kamladevi’s daughter told Wake Up Singapore that she was of the view that her mother was assaulted by a middle-aged man for “no valid reason“.
