A Bear on a Power Pole
It was a surprising scene in a quiet Arizona town when a black bear was found clinging to the top of a utility pole.

The animal had climbed dangerously close to live wires, creating a sudden emergency for both wildlife officials and local workers. In the video, the bear refused to come down and stayed still at the top of the pole, clearly frightened.
Lineman Steps In to Help
Werner Neubauer, a lineman with two decades of experience, was called to the scene. He explained that his goal was not to scare the bear but to prevent it from being electrocuted.
“It might have looked a little bit mean, but I’m trying to keep it from getting itself killed,” he said. He slowly approached the pole and used gentle movements to encourage the bear to climb down.
Why the Bear Climbed Up
Wildlife experts believe the bear had been startled by humans or noise in the area. When frightened, black bears naturally try to escape by climbing something tall—usually a tree.

In this case, the nearest tall object happened to be a power pole. Neubauer noted that many people don’t realize how quickly bears can climb when they panic.
The Moment the Bear Came Down
The bear eventually began sliding down the pole slowly, keeping its claws tight against the wood. People on the ground kept a safe distance, allowing the bear enough space to move without feeling trapped. After reaching the ground, the bear calmly walked back into the wild.
Not the Lineman’s First Bear Encounter
Neubauer later shared that this was not an unusual situation for him. In fact, it was the third time he had helped a bear get down from a power pole.

His previous encounter in 2021 had already prepared him for how to handle the moment safely. His coworkers jokingly call him “the bear whisperer,” a nickname that now seems well-earned.
A Rare but Memorable Event
While bear rescues like this are not common, Arizona officials say it does happen from time to time, especially when bears wander close to towns.

This incident ended safely for both the lineman and the bear, creating a dramatic moment that quickly spread through local news and social media.
