One Man Slipped, the Other Caught Fire
On 13 June, two males broke into a hair salon on Burwood Road in Sydney’s inner west at approximately five in the morning.
What transpired was far from easy.
According to CCTV evidence, the two doused the store with a combustible substance, and while one of them slipped on it prior to rushing out, the other started a fire which ultimately engulfed him in flames.
The man didn’t make it very far, but the flames swiftly spread throughout the salon. He is shown running along Nicholl Lane while burning in another camera position.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and put out the blaze. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Residents living above the salon were evacuated as a safety measure.
Not Just Dangerous — But Also Terrible At Crime
Police later released the CCTV footage to the public, calling the act both dangerous and amateurish. NSW Police say these two men are not just a danger to others but also a clear risk to themselves. They’ve urged anyone who recognises the suspects — or noticed someone with burns after June 13 — to come forward.
One man wore an orange high-vis jumper and dark pants with reflective stripes. The other wore a black hoodie with white stripes and black trousers.
Same Salon Targeted — Twice More
The same salon has since been targeted in two more attempted break-ins — on 2 and 5 July. Neither attempt was successful, but police say the ongoing harassment has affected the business’s ability to operate.
Police Want Them Off the Streets
Detective Acting Superintendent Luke Scott did not hold back. He stressed the importance of identifying the two men and urged the public to help take this “idiot off the road.”

Police confirmed that the shop sustained only minor damage in the fire, but the footage tells a story of reckless endangerment.
Investigators are looking into links between all three incidents. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
Meanwhile, the salon remains open — but shaken.
@7newsaustralia New South Wales Police have released CCTV footage which captured the moment an arsonist set himself and a salon in Burwood, Sydney on fire on June 13. NSW Police launched an investigation and believe the two men in the CCTV may be able to assist with their inquiries. #cctv #arson #salon #fire #investigation #Burwood #7NEWS
