Cancellation Announcement Came in the Early Morning

Fans in Kuching, Sarawak, were left disappointed on Wednesday, September 24, when legendary Australian soft rock duo Air Supply abruptly cancelled their 50th anniversary concert just hours before it was due to begin.

At 3:15 am, the band’s management announced on Facebook that the show at SBC Hall would no longer proceed.

The statement cited “operational reasons on the part of the promoter” and added that efforts were underway to set a new date for the show.

In response to worried fans online, Air Supply’s lead singer, Russell Hitchcock, stated that the band still hopes to return to reschedule a new date and play in Kuching soon.

He also made it clear that “the cancellation had nothing to do with Air Supply.” He described the situation as deeply saddening, stating in a comment on the band’s official Facebook page.

Local Organiser Says Preparations Were Complete

Twig Events, the Kuching-based organiser, said they were just as shocked as fans to learn about the cancellation through Air Supply’s official channels.

The company explained that all preparations, from staging to logistics, had been completed by the evening of September 23, with about 4,000 fans expected at the concert.

The organiser added that no operational issues had ever been flagged to them before the cancellation, KuchingBorneo reported.

Refunds for Ticket Holders Underway

Twig Events has promised to refund all tickets in full.

The refund process began immediately and is expected to be completed within 14 working days, subject to the payment providers.

In addition, Twig Events complained to the Arts, Live Festivals and Events Association (ALIFE) and sought the intervention of its chairman, Dato’ Alan Foo.

The organiser said clearer procedures are needed to prevent similar situations from happening again.

Addressing Speculation

With disappointment spreading quickly, Twig Events also urged the public not to jump to conclusions.

The organiser dismissed speculation that the concert was cancelled due to venue suitability or religious sensitivities, stressing that no such concerns were ever raised.

The venue, Sarawak Blessed Church (SBC) Hall, is a modern four-storey auditorium with world-class facilities capable of seating over 4,000 people, and was fully prepared to host the event.

What’s Next for Fans

For now, Air Supply has assured that a rescheduled date is being worked on. Twig Events said its immediate focus is on processing refunds, while also remaining in communication with the concert promoter about whether a new date will be possible.

The company also announced that it will hold a press conference soon to explain the situation further.
