A 22-year-old man, identified as Ahmad Afzan Syahmi bin Zabidi, who jumped into the Kuantan River, was found dead on the morning of March 5, about 1 km away from where he was last seen.
According to the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department, the victim’s body was retrieved at approximately 8:15 AM by a water rescue team.
His remains were then handed over to the police for further action.
Victim Jumped During a Video Call with His Ex-Girlfriend
In a report by Sinar Harian, the incident occurred on the night of March 3, 2025. At around 10:43 PM, a passerby noticed a high-powered motorcycle parked on Putra Bridge in Kuantan, Malaysia.
The engine was still running, and a mobile phone was left on the seat with a video call still active.

Upon checking the phone, the witness spoke with a woman on the other end, who said the phone’s owner had expressed an intention to jump into the river.
Sensing danger, the witness immediately called emergency services. Authorities received the emergency call at 10:48 PM.
Search and Rescue Operation Launched
Authorities then initiated a search and rescue (SAR) operation at 11:30 PM, involving personnel from the Kuantan Fire and Rescue Department, the police, and the Civil Defence Force (APM).

Search operations continued into March 4, with officers from multiple agencies combing different sections of the river.
Additionally, the Fire and Rescue Department deployed two detection dogs, Frankie and Denti, from its K9 unit to assist in the search.

Body Discovered 1KM Away After Continued Search Efforts
In a further development, on the morning of March 5, the victim’s body was discovered by the Fire Department’s water rescue team about 1 km away from where he had jumped.

The police have since sent the remains to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for a post-mortem.
Victim’s Background and Relationship Details
Kuantan District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu stated that preliminary investigations revealed the victim worked at a factory in Gebeng, Kuantan.
Authorities also contacted the woman on the video call, who identified herself as his ex-girlfriend, Puteri. She stated that they had been in a relationship for a year before breaking up in December 2024.

Following the breakup, it is believed the victim struggled to come to terms with it and told her he intended to jump into the river.
Authorities Urge Public Vigilance Near Bridges and Water Bodies
Authorities urge the public to exercise caution near bridges and bodies of water and to report any suspicious incidents to the relevant authorities.
The case remains under investigation.
