Beaches Covered In Sea Foam
Beaches in Huasco, northern Chile, were smothered in a thick layer of sea foam on Monday after days of heavy rain and powerful winds battered the country.
Footage shows dense white foam spreading across the shoreline, piling up along the sand and drawing stunned residents to the water’s edge.
Storms Trigger Rare Phenomenon
The striking phenomenon was caused by rough waves and strong winds churning up accumulated organic matter and biological remains in the sea.
The foam appeared after a frontal system swept through at least 10 regions of Chile. Intermittent rain continued across Atacama and Coquimbo, with further downpours forecast throughout the day.
Weather Toll Continues To Rise
According to Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service, Senapred, the severe weather has killed 10 people and left four missing. A further 2,422 people have been affected, while more than 1,100 have been taken to shelters.
